Ancestry Citizenship
My question relates to the application for British citizenship on the basis of UK ancestry.?

Both my maternal grandparents were British citizens by birth
My mother was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and has never applied for British citizenship although having the legal right to do so (based on her parents being British citizens)
I was born on 20 July 1966 in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe)

Question: Can I apply for British citizenship through my mother (she is still alive and will apply for British citizenship if it will assist an application by me) ?

No. Citizenship is only passed down through one generation only in the UK. Your mother is automatically a British citizen as both her parents were British. It does not matter that she was not born in the UK. However, that made her a British citizen by descent. This means that she cannot pass citizenship on to her children unless they were born in the UK.

Ireland allows citizenship to be passed on two generations, the UK does not.

Commonwealth citizens are able to apply for an Ancestry visa which is a five year work visa that does not require the applicants to meet the stringent points based assessment usually required for work visas,

After five years living and working continuously in the UK, they may be eligible to apply for citizenship. This is the only concession the UK has to those with UK born grandparents.

Citizenship status, under social contract theory, carries with it both rights and responsibilities. Active citizenship is the philosophy that citizens should work towards the betterment of their community through economic participation, public service, volunteer work, and other such efforts to improve life for all citizens. In this vein, schools in some countries provide citizenship education.
