What would a person say their ancestry was if that country no longer exists?
For instance, Bohemia is now a region in the Czech Republic. My great grandfather was born in Bohemia. Would I be of Bohemian decent or Czech decent?
Here’s one way to look at it.
Let’s say you were born in Michigan. Now let’s say that at the next Olympics, we beat Canada at Hockey; the Canadians get mad, send troops across the border and take over all our northern states. Michigan is now part of Ontario.
If someone asks where you were born, what do you say?
If you say “The United States”, they may think you mean the current United States – the part Canada didn’t take over. And that wouldn’t be accurate.
If you say “Canada” or “Ontario”, they might think you mean the pre-invasion Canada or Ontario. And that wouldn’t be accurate, either.
If you say “Michigan”, anyone who knows their history will know exactly where that is/was. Of course, some of the younger folks might not know where Michigan was, so you could clarify by saying, “Michigan, now part of Ontario.”
In your case, I’d say you have Bohemian ancestry, or that your great grandfather came from Bohemia… and if you want to be clear, you can add that Bohemia is now part of the Czech Republic.
