Family Tree maker software vs. Ancestry.com paid membership?
I am wondering if someone can explain the differences in 3 things for me:
1. Family tree maker by Ancestry.com, a free ancestry.com membership, & a paying membership. Why would I buy the family tree maker software in the store if I an create a tree online with a free membership as well as a paid membership.
2. What are the advantages vs. disadvantages of buying software? Does FTM have features that are unavailable through a paid membership?
Thanks for all your answers in advance
Genealogists used a very scientific methodology in their work, except when it comes to software and then the opinions fling off the fan at high speeds.
You options are:
1) Keep and operate your data base entirely on your own computer using an on-board software package. You can work off-line, and you own and control all the information. You will not have to pay subscription fees to a web-site in order to access your tree, ever. A stolen computer or hard-drive crash doesn’t scare me at all. I use carbonite.com — the $50 a year is absolutely the best deal in insurance you can buy.
2) You can do “cloud computing,” This way you don’t have to load anything on your computer, you just do everything at the site. Just like Yahoo! Mail, cloud computing will allow you to access your information from anywhere in the world as long as the site doesn’t go out of business (this can be very handy when traveling.) I don’t expect Ancestry.com to go bankrupt suddenly, in which case you could lose everything, however, you will have no way to easily catalog and organize information from other Internet data-base sites. And if you want to print out a really neat report, you’ll always be shuffled to the site’s profit center, when an on-board program could do it at home with a decent printer.
You can mix the two methods if you wish. If you wish to buy a program, keep in mind there are several really good ones. I love FTM 16 — it has great report functions, but the newer versions are sadly lacking in this regard. You might prefer to try out the free trials of Rootsmagic, Legacy, and The Master Genealogist to see what you want in a program. All of these will allow you to upload your tree to any site if you wish to share with others.
I subscribe to Ancestry World Deluxe and it’s a terrific database, but I don’t use their on-line program and still have problems with locking my info-up in their profit centers.
In other words, I do a mix, but I keep my trees (I have plenty in the works) on my own machine.
However it works out for you, have a blast and happy hunting.
