Ancestry Genetic Testing
How can I trace my Hapsburg ancestry?

I have a family tree that states that my great-great-great grandfather was the “sohn of Graf (count) von Salm”. However, my family insists that this man was, in fact, the son of the brother of Kaiser Franz Josef I (who was not the Count von Salm), and a Czech chambermaid. The man’s son, in fact, was the personal assistant to the Prince Auersperg (family name of the Hapsburgs.) I guess they think that whoever composed my family tree was lying for the purposes of protecting Franz Josef’s brother (I have no idea which or what his name is.)

Is there some sort of Hapsburg genetic test, and would it matter if I was the great-great-great-grandchild of a Hapsburg? I am American, and generally not your typical Austrian royal.

Would there be any money in this relationship? How about if I am related to the Graf von Salm?

Your last set of questions is the easiest. The fall of Austria-Hungary at the end of WWII and the “disenthronement” of the Holy Roman Empire effectively impoverished all royals depending on a pension from the family

The genetic test will only help if you, your mother, grandmother and great-great grandmother all on the same line are unbroken back to the Habsburgs.

If you have the source of the information that you found, we would be happy to look and see if it’s verifiable. Just drop an email through my profile and I’ll look to see how accurate it is. Otherwise, post the name of the supposedly illicit son and we’ll see what we find.

You are right, BTW, to be skeptical. Anybody else’s research is always suspect. Around here, you’ll find most everyone will tell you to verify and document every person on every tree and to use a critical eye to make sure the original researcher didn’t leap to conclusions or go off on a tangent.

A gene is the basic unit of heredity in a living organism. All living things depend on genes. Genes hold the information to build and maintain their cells and pass genetic traits to offspring. A modern working definition of a gene is a locatable region of genomic sequence, corresponding to a unit of inheritance, which is associated with regulatory regions, transcribed regions, and or other functional sequence regions. Incorrect colloquial usage of the term gene may actually refer to an allele: a gene is the basic instruction, a sequence of DNA, while an allele is one variant of that instruction. Deep Ancestry (Paperback)

Deep Ancestry (Paperback)

The fossil record locates human origins in Africa, but little is known about the great journey that took Homo sapiens to the far reaches of the Earth. How did we, each of us, end up where we are? Why do we appear in such a wide array of different colors and features? Such questions are even more amazing in light of genetic evidence that we are all related–descended from a com- mon African ancestor who lived only 60,000 years ago. Thanks to new genetic testing methods, we now know that the greatest history book ever written is the one hidden in our DNA.In Deep Ancestry, geneticist and explorer Spencer Wells unravels the slight changes in our DNA over time to tell the ancient story of our shared human journey. He also details the current work of Genographic Project–the landmark study that will assemble the world`s largest collection of DNA samples to map how humankind populated the planet. He describes how the Project uses sophisticated computer analysis of DNA contributed by hundreds of thousands of people–including indigenous populations and the general public–to reveal man`s migratory history and to better understand the connections and differences that make up the human race. The narrative works backward, starting from today and gradually working its way to humankind`s common ancestors. From the beginning, the book taps into a reader`s interest in genealogy, family history, and ethnic identity. Most of us have a decent sense of our family history, but eventually we all hit a brick wall. DNA takes us beyond it, and this is the unifying theme that will lead us from the stories of the present into the realm of deep ancestry. Now in a thoroughly revised second edition, Deep Ancestry represents the very latest research on where we came from and relates it to our own personal quest to discover the deep ancestry behind our family genealogies and touch the depths of our common origins. For more information about the Genogr
