Are online genealogy sites work?

I've always wondered about my family tree, but I wonder how these genealogy of the workplace. How to compile their records and search techniques. Basically I wonder if any of them worth the money. Because I have family in Europe and Mexico, and I do not know if it was a waste of money to try to use the site if they just could not find anything, seems to be no guarantees. Is there a free site?
