Famous battles of the American Civil War
The American Civil War was a time when the nation was divided into two groups. One side fought for freedom and abortion to slavery, while the other fought for their perceived birthright slave ownership. The main event was unprecedented in U.S. history, which tested the link between northern and southern states in reality. The war itself devastated cities, towns and states and has seen more than 620,000 victims who suffer both sides. That figure far exceeds the deaths of America from the Revolution to the Iraq War.
For military historians, Civil War there were several battles that defined the character and strategy different general staff. In Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant to Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, each specific battle shows the courage and the personality of each. Unlike the battles of today, where modern weapons play an important part, Civil War battles were decided by fast and quick maneuvers in the flank of an enemy or expose and attack a weak side. It has been said that the Civil War American had a couple of battles that affected the outcome of the war. Of the many battles during these difficult times, three battles deserve recognition by all others.
The First Battle of Bull Run was the first large-scale battle fought for the Union and the Confederates during the Civil War. The battle, fought on July 21, 1861, faced with inexperienced troops of both sides of the realities of war. The Union army led by Gen. Irvin McDowell crossed Bull Run to meet the Confederate generals Joseph P. Johnston and Beauregard. The battle ended as the Union army fled back to Washington DC This Battle displayed a lack of preparedness of both armies.
The Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862 was the battle between the armies Union and Confederate armies near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek. This battle also marked the first major battle will take place in the side of the Union the north / south line. The low for the day riding a record high of 23,000 victims. Shortly after the battle, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Of all the battles during the Civil War, none had a more permanent impact on the outcome of the war that the battle of Gettysburg. Fought July 1 to July 3, 1863 on the outskirts of the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was the last offensive ever undertaken by the Confederates, led by commander, General Robert E. Lee. This battle has claimed as many casualties in the war with the estimated death toll at 57,225 from both sides. This battle also marked the last General Lee attempted to invade the northern states.
All other Civil War battles are well worth mentioning, but did not have the impact of three battles. Each of these battles were such an important role in the conduct of the war that if a battle had been a different outcome could have ended the war so different, changing the course of American history.
