What is the best software to use for the assembly and the investigation of a family tree?
I'm starting to investigate my background family. I've seen several software programs that will help with research and design. I want to get as much as possible about each person … birth, marriage, death dates, employment, location … What would you suggest is the best way to start?
I like Roots Magic, which is the successor Family Origins for Windows. Family Tree Maker is the market leader. Both are about $ 30 U.S.. RM offers a test of 14 or 30 days off. I think so does FTM. You can download the trial version. PAF, the Mormons, is free. You can Google "Genealogy Software comparison" to some independent evaluations. My personal biases are not universal truths. Any decent genealogy software have ways to add data on individuals. RM has a couple of hundreds of events, including the "caste", if they are indigenous. I mention that to show how comprehensive it is. Born, married, dead, buried, occupation, living, service military, cause of death, adopted, bar mitzvah, baptism. . . Each event has a place and space for a date or date range, if applicable. Regarding research, the phloem way to start is with their parents. The good stuff really is in their parents and grandparents' memories. No site will tell you how your great grandparents decorated the tree Christmas ornaments cut with aluminum foil during the depression, how Great Uncle Elmer wooed his wife with a banjo, or how Uncle John made his way through college in the 1960s by smuggling herbs. Talk with family members who live before it's too late. I paste a text file with links a dozen major genealogy websites free in their responses in 1 to 6 times a day. Most of us 10 first responders our actions have answers. There is some coincidence, but all are good.
