He is known for his childrens music, intended for the age group that is too old for Sesame Street but too young for pop music. However, he also writes and performs for adults.Chapin attended State University of New York at Plattsburgh and graduated in 1966. From 19711976, he hosted a TV show called Make a Wish. He is the son of Jim Chapin and the brother of Harry Chapin, and occasionally appears in Harry Chapin tribute concerts (often with brother Steve Chapin). He has appeared in the Broadway production Pump Boys and Dinettes, among others. He is married to Bonnie Chapin; his daughters and stepdaughter are musicians as well (the Chapin Sisters). He graduated from MIT in 1937 with a degree in Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering. He also had business dealings in Hong Kong making flashlights. In 1945 Ralph returned to Batavia and joined the R. E. Chapin Manufacturing Works, Inc., during this time he held the position of Chairman and Treasurer. Sangha member of the Rochester Zen Center and one of the earliest American Zen practitioners. He joined the center in 1965. Longtime friend of Philip Kapleau. He is notable for his continued donations to the fledgling center in the 1960s. In 2000 he donated his family land near Batavia New York to the Rochester Zen Center. The center immediately broke ground for the retreat center. In 2007 the zendo was finally completed and regular sesshin are held there.
