Can Greek gods are real?
I know, it's just mythology, but after reading the Odyssey, it seemed a bit strange that people go through all the trouble to create a complex family tree of Greek gods.
Of course they're real. All the gods are real. The question is whether to believe the foot of the mythology. What many modern people in Western cultures do not realize is that the mythology and religion are not synonymous. This is difficult to understand from the Bible is both myth and writing, and belief in the mythical elements is part of religion. In Greek religion, myth was considered symbolic truths for instruction, not necessarily literal truth. It was very common in the ancient world to revere the gods without literal belief in its myths. You could ask a Hindu today about the concept. As people have created a family tree … Homer and Hesiod were not working from scratch. What they did was organize a complex web of myths, many of them contradictory (although that's not a problem from the polytheistic point of view) in a narrative more or less coherent. Not invent the gods, however. The myriad of conceptions of the gods evolved over time. Jason's answer above shows a faulty understanding particular of both mythology and polytheism. Arguments like his are worthless.
