Free Sites Like Ancestry.com
Is it a SCAM???

Are those “incentive” programs a scam? You know, the ones where they ask for your information and say if you sign up for programs on certain sites, (like, joining ancestry.com for a trial membership), that you will win a free ipod, cell phone, laptop, etc. If you complete the things they ask you to do will they actually send you a “free” item? I’m not naive, and I know it sounds way too good to be true, so I’m just wondering what the trick or catch is? Personal experience would be a plus!

Ok here’s how it works: You sign up for this free “widget” and then you are taken to a page or two that is full of offers that you can also sign up for. Usually these are trial offers from companies. Here’s the catch though, in order to get your free “widget” you are required to also sign up for 3 or more offers from other companies. In the end you usually end up paying as much as you would if you just bought the “widget” outright. Of course doing it this way you also get some extra stuff from the offers you completed.

One time I did this for a free laptop, and yes I did get the laptop, but it costed me like $1200 from signing up for other companies offers and products.
