Mystery Island Paradise and Anton Chekhov

Mysterious island paradise and Anton Chekhov

By Wendell W. Solomons

scholars of Russian literature came to Sri Lanka at a symposium on Chekhov and Bunin writers.

After July 1st, 1890 visit, Chekhov, in letters to his friends described the Russian island of Sakhalin in hell and paradise called Ceylon.

During the visit the Russian academic March 2006 wonder why Anton Chekhov wrote a detailed book to describe Sakhalin, an island penal colony, while not published until a short essay on the island he had called 'Paradise'. The world in general has appointed a historic pilgrimage site on the island – Adam's Peak.

Chekhov fellow Sergio Bunin had visited and written about Ceylon. Bunin had become the first Russian to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The experts had symposium in March icy Moscow in a suit and tie. You can feel the tropical sun that did to them in Colombo. The home team, Sri Lanka, scholars coming Russian Cultural Center at the symposium, wearing light clothing cotton blend.

However, there was the tropical sunlight only that the Russian team had to overcome. A mystery of Anton Chekhov pursued them to the symposium.

He was asked – why not share, Chekhov impressions of Ceylon with its large number readers?

Although Chekhov's fame today rests primarily on his plays, he wrote hundreds of short stories, even if you were to distinguish those in their teens. It was noted at the symposium that Chekhov had traveled to Kandy in the central highlands, where he met a Russian-speaking Buddhist monk of Buryatia in Russia. The monk looked at the details of a native healer lady and then traveled to Chekhov to find a cure for a disease of Chekov.

Chekhov know was impressed with the lady and gave her a necklace. On leaving the island, including Chekhov is carried with him were a pair of mongoose and some palm civet of the hand … But why not share with its large audience, a story of his discoveries in Ceylon?

At the symposium, a member of the Sri Lanka attempted to place Russia's guests at ease.

He suggested: "Perhaps most interesting of Chekhov was familiar with Buddhism?

When he almost felt a "Ah! through the participants' thinking, here was relief at last!

Buddhism brought me to thoughts of Helena P. Blavatsky. His visit with Henry Steele Olcott had preceded Chekhov to Ceylon. Olcott had been leading a major initiative for the establishment of more schools on the island. Sitting next to me was a woman journalist from Moscow, and I reminded him of Yelena Blavatskaya …

She said: "It seems more than Blavatskaya currently realize. "

He then commented on the vivid now faces at the symposium, "Look at the natural smile. They are not the only stages of American advertising industry. "

House experts were happy that the guests were comfortable. I also read the smiles as two groups that had broken the ice and received affirmation of shared interests.

A cocktail evening planned to continue. However, after that are immersed in some snacks. I was lost in the concern: "Was the mystery solved? If interested Chekhov Buddhism?

For Research Now

The Russian scholars pointed out that after Shakespeare, Chekhov had become the most next popular playwright. He also told the audience that the only reminder of Chekhov knew outside the former Soviet Union is at the Grand Oriental Hotel Or – GDH – in Colombo.

I could go to Great Eastern Hotel for clues. The location of the hotel, which had been purchased by a state bank in the early 1950, was very familiar. At the bank, my father was elected to oversee the rebuilding of the hotel and like a child who had visited him in the job. A hotel is not a museum, but my father's generation, like the previous one, had preserved a monument in the suite of Chekhov.

In the alcove leading to the room Chekhov fall images. Inside the room are the images, Chekov sitting with Tolstoy and then Gorky.

The illustrations and the fourth took me in time. I recalled the feelings involved and again the nature of the people who had kept the monument to the writer.

Speaking of feelings involved – Chekhov study Buddhism is following the debate on the origins of biological life caused by the 19th century publication of the Theory of Evolution Darwin? " Chekhov was looking for a previous anchor or stronger ethics for society and for Blavatskaya and Olcott?

Speaking Historically, the ethics of such philosophies like Buddhism was introduced in 600 BC, ie before Christianity. earlier philosophies is illustrated gain in the Bible and this event is briefly described an issue that absorbed page after page of Ecclesiastes:

The wise man has eyes in his head, while the fool walks in darkness, but I realized that the same fate reaches them.
Then I thought of my heart, "The fate of the fool will overtake me also. So what I can do to win the wise? "I said in my heart," it also makes sense. "(Ecclesiastes 2:13 / 14)

Make Buddhism and Christianity deal with the issue of "sense" in human life?

Chekhov was raised in a religious family who sang centered liturgies Old Slavonic home and read the Bible. Foundational philosophies not escape. Take an answer to the question in his short story "The flag number: 6." Hero exclaims the Greek Stoics Chekhov whose ethics of detachment reached its zenith, not much after the arrival of Buddhism –

"What was saying? Oh, yeah! This is what I mean: one of the Stoics sells himself into slavery to redeem his neighbor, so, you see, and a stoic reaction to stimuli … "
We know from the forms of stimulation, 'compassion' has priority Gautama Buddha teachings. Four dwellings in Nobles of the existence of first place is reserved for "Karuna" (in Pali 'compassion'.) Last but not least we are witnesses of Gautama Buddha's personal life provides us with the example of his practice of caring for people and life.

Chekhov Audience and Message
As for "compassion" in Chekhov described his choice of form and substance of his own work on a letter to his brother Alexander:

1

Absence over the verbiage of political-economic-social;
2
total objectivity;
3
Accurate descriptions of people and objects;
4
Extreme brevity;
5
Audacity and originality; flee the stereotype;
June
Compassion.

Chekhov did not intend that their work is limited to a sectarian subculture alone. From what he writes in 1 above could conclude that it had decided to write for large audiences. To make their work keeps them at bay mutant 'fashions and ideologies of the time. "
That phrase is a 1998 original and comes from Western banker named James Wolfensohn.

Win spport – as Kurt Waldheim – James Wolfensohn, had risen to head the Washington-based World Bank in the 1990s. As Waldheim in the post of Secretary General United Nations, his bio-data later exposes as a Nazi officer.

Wolfensohn traveled to development banks in Washington DC of the Bank's leadership position in New York Schröder J and from the same board queer astute and commercial bank directors Allen Dulles had been elevated to the head of the CIA. The Bank Schröder J Stein represented IH Gremany Bank which in turn was led by Schroeder's relationship. To complete the circle, Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler among the faithful of age belonged to the clan of IH Stein and bank checks issued provided their personal accounts in Cologne.

The words were written to Wolfensohn World Bank directors after the 1998 final collapse of the Russian ruble at the hands of reformists within the 'monetarist label had been "sent to Moscow in 1993.

According to the testimony placed before U.S. Congress by Professor Janine Wedel and according to the research of Anne Williamson (both available on the www), the monetarist fashion group was prepared by Deputy Direct Wolfenson, who is also the bank's strong second position of chief economist.

After the leader Wolfensohn monetarist comment Milton Friedman began to close his book but the mutant virus, a negative nihilism, it becomes alienated local community and the creation of social dissolution.

Chekhov in response to nihilism
Over time, Chekhov, a Russian strain of nihilism had become a haven for a myriad professional social and political movements such as anarchists, Decembrists and populist who preached a retreat of the monarchy.

Czar Alexander II, who responded U.S. to call President Abraham Lincoln when he confronted a violent separation from the southern slave states in the U.S.. Alexander II sent a flotilla of warships Russians in New York and California to Lincoln's request. At home, the reform aimed to Alexander II abolished serfdom in 1861 and corporal punishment. He established the autonomy local, initiated judicial reform, reviewed the educational system and better management of the police. "

Dissolution social ethics
If the social good is deconstructed or hidden by a myth or fad, and then a finger may seem to exist without the body of humanity. In that ideology happy, "me" society survive if we die of cold.

The monetarists like Milton Friedman closely associated with Alice Rosenbaum. Born in St. Petersburg In 1906, Rosenbaum later settled in the U.S. to start the presentations on social philosophy in the 1930s under the name of Ayn Rand. Borrowed nihilism and then took over the border to Thomas Hobbes in the 1650s.

Looking in a wave of fraud that affected companies marauders U.S., New York financier George Soros said illustrates the situation as "counterproductive." Two can play the same game.

Rizal admired Colombo beautiful buildings, barracks, temples, streets lined with trees, botanical garden and museum. After visiting a hospital doctor wrote: "It has no odor of the disease, no mess, anything you remember of the disease …"

Chekhov thus is suited for Sri Lanka and Russia, where people must go back and incorporate the social good. The stock exchange must leave form of a pre-civic, pre-agrarian and preindustrial era cult of selfishness.
Looking over our hurting world, billions of people can be inspired by the work of personalities such as Anton Chekhov.

Today, video and TV are available. book born in Sri Lanka Michael Ondaatje became in the movie "The English Patient." Conspicuous by the Oscar winning more awards than "Evita." U.S. Chairman turned history with a comment that he preferred Ondaatje.

A Ends Chekhov budget comes from "History of the Artist" (1896):

"My life is boring, boring, monotonous, because I am a painter, a rare fish, and are concerned about envy, discontent, disbelief in my work all my life: I am always poor, I am a tramp, but you are a rich man, normal, a landowner, a knight – why do you live so tamely and take so little of life? "

Chronology
I had to develop a chronology of the events of this attempt to solve the mystery.
Born January 29, 1860, Chekhov had contracted tuberculosis. From the age of 24 when he suffered his first episode of bloody sputum and lung pain, health deterioration was seen. In 1889 she saw her brother Nikolai die of tuberculosis. Plus, his training as a doctor that left no doubt that his life was not allowed to raise their children to maturity.

Noting that, we must come to grips with a dedication by which Chekhov who had reached 30-years old, traveled 5000 miles Sakhalin ground and returned by ship through Hong Kong, Singapore (which he found depressing) India, Ceylon, Port Said and Odessa to Moscow. Before this trip began in April 1890, Chekhov was observed:

"After Australia in the past, and Cayenne, Sakhalin is the only place where you can study the colonization by criminals. All of Europe is interested in it and it is of any use to us? Of books I've read, it is clear that we have left millions of people rot in prison, destroying them carelessly, thoughtlessly, barbarously; we went the people in chains through the cold across thousands of miles, infected with syphilis, depraved, increased crime and placed the blame for all this to the guards Prisons red nose. All civilized Europe knows that's not the guards, who are to blame, but all of us, however, this is not our business, we are not interested .
John Coope study notes Sakhalin Chekhov: From outside of the prison gave an impression of cleanliness and order, but under the conditions of blocks were very miserable. The entire middle of the building was taken by a large tilting platform plank on which the prisoners slept. Had no bedding and the entire room was full of rags, paper, bread, and several belongings.
"It is a beast there is a nihilist, a denial of personal rights, privacy and comfort. "

Returning to the family home Chekov in Moscow on December 1, 1890, Chekhov began immediately collect and organize their work in Sakhalin. Immediately Similarly, the strain of the expedition took its toll on their health and humor are usually benign. "Life in Moscow after my fatigues in Sakhalin worldly look so sad and I feel like screaming out loud, "he wrote to his publisher Suvorin shortly after his return." I'm getting sick and tired of my friends and acquaintances in Moscow. "

Chekhov spent four years in the writing, published finally in 1895 as "The Island: A Journey to Sakhalin" and was hailed by both liberals and leftists and signal contribution to the reform movement prison.

This writing was slowed by, among other things, the role of Chekhov as a census taker and commitment to help victims of devastating famine in Russia in 1891. Also fought for the construction of tuberculosis sanatoriums and schools for peasants who attended during epidemics of cholera, typhoid and others, the treatment of thousands for free.

In 1892 Chekhov had bought and moved to a farm in the village of Melikhovo, where some of his best stories including stories emerged that represent intellectual detachment, egocentricity and megalomania such as "Ward Number Six" (1892) and "The Black Monk" (1894).

In 1897, Chekhov's tuberculosis began to celebrate their work. Need a temperate climate, took to life either in the Crimea or abroad.

Photos are not represented it was a tall, handsome, attractive to women and only after the age of 40 years made a weakened Chekov choose what might have interfered with their work, participation in marriage. Since August 1900 Moscow Art Theatre actress Olga Knipper (which held a central role in Chekhov's works) began to coax the playwright joke sick on marriage in his letters, and married Chekhov her in May 1901.

the work of Chekhov "The Cherry Orchard" came on the scene with great success on 17 January, 1904 Chekhov died in July of that year in Badenweiler. In a quest for more foreign objects, which later discovered that Germany (Which has become the most popular playwright out there) in 2004 was named a square in the city of Chekhov in Badenweiler thus adding to a bust erected in 1906 by friends of Russia in the city where Chekhov for medical treatment in 1904.

Chekhov is Novodeviche buried at Moscow monastery, traditional leaders and celebrities.

Speaking soon here, I must add that in the tents Four Noble, second, 'Mettha "teaches that one should live in peace with all beings.

The third, 'Muditha', teaches the joy of sympathy towards another person (for example, my practice to replace altruism envy and greed.)

Greek Stoics taught detachment from the things of the world to achieve peace of mind for academic work (cynics went beyond cultivating indifference to ridicule in the world.)

However, Gautama Buddha, through the fourth Noble house "Upekkha" asked not to be awed or amazed households by joy and sorrow of the world. He does not ask families to break the world; his Four Noble Abodes contain a call for balance and fairness, but not indifference.

The legacy Chekhov includes more than 400 stories. Both are waiting for developments in video and TV scripts. Chekhov's legacy includes dozens of dramas that still can be transferred more quickly to television … Chekhov can not be judged in the context of advertising based on consumerism. The study of the needs as a mobilizer of compassion and social good. Back to the incorporation of social good at the time seemed so dangerous to me that the July 28, 1992 sent me 3,000 protest explanatory words (visible in the WWW) World Bank and copied to the "Moscow News." I suggested there that Russia could fool once, to the east, as happened now, in China, for example, had begun a policy.The carefully review the label for 1977 the island's social deconstruction was "open economy". After a decade and a half of tests, the social virus was renamed as "economic reform and used by the monetarists on Russian 1993.Impressed by what he saw, Rizal said: "Colombo is beautiful, smart and elegant than Singapore, and Manila Galle Point …" Your comments are not alone. We could take the plate of a second in the Grand Hotel Oriental indicating that Jose Rizal, a physician, man of letters ", patriot, martyr and national hero Philippines, presented at the hotel in 1882, during one of his four visits to Sri Lanka Colombo.In self-destructive savagery imposed since 1977 when the World Bank and began surgery social members. As a result, Chekhov island paradise and can not be easily blinded evoked.They civic traditions that developed from 1215 Magna Carta, an agreement that limited the power of the king of England. In the hands of Rosenbaum and Milton Friedman, who had jumped on the platform of Presidential Economic Adviser U.S. nihilism began to change whole societies to a pre-civic opportunism.Hobbes wild and intoxicating, a plagiarist Machiavelli's Italy, had pamphleteered that 'a war of all against the other "would help the British elites dominate over common people. This trend was discarded because the solution would lead to social Britain. However, Rosenbaum and Friedman belong within the last groups, migrants who were strangers in the 20th century Western civilisation.The up an ethics nihilist ('try everything external to your work table as nothing') allowed a doctor, for example, to care for a sick patient regardless of whether the patient broke into anarchists, liberals, monarchists or policy in the ward.
We must distinguish that part of this coincided with Anton Chekhov. Taking Hypcrites the oath during his training as a doctor, he felt the need to help the general population, regardless of fraction political and labeling himself a free artist.
However, more. From the land that he knew firsthand, Russia, Chekhov became worldwide a mobilizer of the hearings to the public good, without being ostracized by her man as the exclusivity virus deconstruction.Yet sectarian or philosophical, Alexander II was assassinated by dropped a bomb in the car. The name of a local revolutionary group, the Narodnaya Volya ("People's Will") was called but what could not always be evaluated was the flow of money to political groups, including the funds coming from foreign sources for subversion in Russia.Using in prime time on state television channels, the maniacs promised a stable ruble convertible. He went on to wreak havoc. With the most undervalued currency a hundred times household income dropped to nothing. The mothers and fathers sell their homes in search of food. Without a roof, they and their children were lost in the dark. Frozen bodies had to be picked up on the streets of ice cream the morning.Scapegoating Jews used to meet the Germans to Hitler. Therefore, it could decide that Wolfensohn was speaking of the authority on "fads and ideologies of the day. "The media can be used to propagate a myth to impoverish the population. However, witnesses to the difference between (a) the Buddhist temple where stanzas are sung in ancient Pali and (b) the Christian church today where hymns are sung in local language, you can expect any similarity between the values? Something to pursue underpinned. No ritual, but in deeper sense, can the anchor of Buddhism is considered to belong in the work of Chekhov? This may have contributed to its popularity rise Chekhov now traditional among the Buddhists of Sri Lanka – or put another way, Chekhov found feelings had long SOLO NO sympathy in the Christian heartland.

When Rebecca Monroe–married to Alistair, a scientist who doesn’t believe in fate, but rather genetic disposition–discovers that she is pregnant, she begins to question what makes us who we are and whether her own precarious family history will play a role in her future. For Rebecca, the wry and observant narrator of The Family Tree, simple things said over breakfast take on greater meaning: a home improvement project foreshadows darker things to come; the color of one’s eyes, the slope of a forehead are all missing pieces to the truth behind the family tree. Moving the story forward are a deeply loving mother who hangs the world on the making of the holiday trifle; an aging hippie aunt who may or may not be having an affair; a sister with an overactive imagination; and a spirited grandmother whose lifelong secret could shake the foundation of the entire family. At once nostalgic and refreshingly original, The Family Tree is a sophisticated story of one woman and the generations of women who came before her and whose legacy shaped her life and its emotional landscape.
