How do you search on Ancestry.co.uk? Having trouble finding people?

Hi there, I’ve just signed up for an Ancestry.co.uk account and am having trouble. I am trying to find my grandfather and I know his exact name and DoB (I have his birth certificate in front of me!) but all I come up with is the register of his death and I can’t find the index entry for his birth.

If you are looking for him on the census remember that they are hand written and some the the information is incorrect to start with or wrongly transcribed.
Look a year of two either side of his date of birth, try and think of ways that his name could have been misspelled, and other things his place of birth could have been called. If you have his birth cert you will have his parents names so try looking for them instead.

I don’t know why you’d want to find him on the births marriages and deaths index seeing you already have the cert but if you do try not putting in his whole middle name (if he has one) if using freebmd – write it like this William B* Smith.

And if he was born say 30 March he would probably have been registered a few days later in the next quarter so look for him in April-May-June.
