What are the qualifications for being “hispanic”?
Most people today are immigrating from Britain, France, China, or some African country to latin America..There ancestry is mosty in these places and not in Latin America. For example people call Bill Richardson is “Latino” but his father immigrated from England (hence the last name). So I guess in cultural terms he’d be half Anglo. It seems to me there is not much thought going into this term hispanic. Its archaic to slap people with different histories and cultures under one label.
So does simply being born in latin America make you “latino” despite most of you ancestry (blood) belongs in Europe or Africa?
Good question, and very complex topic…
I also wondered how certain “Latinos” consider themselves, when they are actually from non hispanic heritage.
For instance, in Argentina, there are some german, armenian, jewish communities…In Brazil, there are japanese, german, jewish communities…In most of latino-american countries, there are arab communities ( mostly Christian Lebaneses)…And in countries like Cuba or Colombia, there are also many Latinos that are actually African descents (just like in the US), and of course they speak spanish…
I suppose they can be considered “Hispanic” only if they wish to be called “Hispanic”, it depends how deep is Latin culture in their identity…
