What does my Italian Surname Mean?
My last name is Iannotti, and I’m considered a 4th generation Italian, born in the U.S. I can speak some italian, and I know that my ancestry stretches far across Italy, (Le Marche, Naples and Sicily).
I also know notti means “nights” but what could the first part to my name signify?
There are Iannotti family in Abruzzo, one in Rome, but the more important is in Campania. It is an archaic form of an hypocoristic contraction of Johannes name, of this use, we have an example in 1360 in an act where they are cited: “…Iannotus (Ianotus) de Fonte Maroso (Fonte Maruso) q. Nicholai (Nicolai); Ianotus de Guisulfis…”.
It could ever be a modification of the widely spread in Italy surname Giannotti (Gi is pronunced like J) which originated from the Giovanni -(John) name
