Do you know anyone with the name of Boutilier?
I have really wanted to know more about my family. I know they're originally from Nova Scotia and Maine. My grandfather (Of which I get the name) had 13 siblings. I tried to look at things in the family tree online, but I found nothing. Just interested!
Thanks
The real spelling you want is Boutillier and the family was originally from Quebec. It is also a family for research frustrating because there was six separate (and unrelated) families that this line is often confused. These include Boutillet, Bouthilliette, Botiere, Boutier lines. I spent two years working on the separation of the correct spelling when I researched the family Boutillet someone about 10 years ago. We will not have much luck with online trees because they are notoriously unreliable, but also be made by people who are well intentioned but not well versed in the nuances of French-Canadian customs. There is a well known error a Massachusetts researcher who published the pedigree Bouthilliette and made a disastrous mistake to combine the child with his mother in a marriage and the mother had to give birth to children of the child when she was almost 60 … and changed its name to Boutillier halfway through it and ended up in the wrong line altogether. This tree famous as an important genealogy magazine is published without verifying it and ended up having to retract the story and issue an apology for their lapses. To locate the family of his grandfather, begins to find the church where he was baptized. There is no way to trace French-Canadians, but by the Church. Once you get back to research mid-1800, will have to go to a very good library that has a complete copy of the movie called "Lois Marriage Index." You can take way from there up to the 1700's. From there, you can research online to RHRP University of Montreal. Once you reach the RHRP, its Research will be carried out in a couple of days. If you're in New England, there are several major libraries and archives to make French-Canadian research. Do not try this online. You need to use reliable records, not to travel and end up in the wrong line. It is very easy to do when all children all lines of a family seems to be the name of all his cousins.
