How I can get the best picture of a book cover?

POD have written a book and I have a picture of a family tree that I would like put on the cover. The tree is one of those silver have frames for pictures. The tree is about 12 inches x 9 and has pictures that are (each) around 2 inches square. Would it be better to bring it to a graphic artist, a professional photographer, or just take the same picture? The printer said that the resolution must be at least 300 dpi (whatever that is)

I recommend a photographer. Or, go to the nearest university community and get help from a student photography. (That happens to be my current situation) will most likely be able to access studies with different lights and you can choose funds.
