Ancestor Dna Testing

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Who do I contact for advice about getting DNA testing on a deceased ancestor of whom I am an heir?

My ancestor railroad magnate Mark Hopkins, but the heirs have been disputed. I like to see if the debate can be settled once and for all, now that DNA testing is available. It would be very expensive, but worth it if I could show my family are the rightful heirs.

Despite the oh-so-eloquent writing palette, it is just that an attorney is needed for this task. And you're right that this can cost a small fortune to follow. I'm assuming the way it intends to establish its relationship is to exhume the body? If so, you must provide the court with a very compelling reason to do so. It's very, very difficult to convince a court this. Not to mention if they were not in the will of Mr. Hopkins, what makes you think you are entitled to anything? Will provide for his heirs identified?

Policymakers are increasingly coming to grips with legal issues related to taking DNA samples from people who have not been convicted of crimes. The practice of taking DNA samples from convicted criminals is now largely uncontroversial. The courts have routinely upheld laws that authorise DNA collection from both current and former convicts, and the resulting databases of DNA have become powerful tools to analyse forensic evidence collected from crime scenes. The databases help to clear innocent suspects and redirect law enforcement officials away from unproductive investigations. A trend that is causing significant debate is gathering DNA samples from people who are arrested but not convicted. Some people worry that collecting DNA creates the potential for abuse of genetic information stored in databases. This book explores the background and issues of DNA collection and testing.
