Tracing ancestry with DNA…?
I plan on tracing my ancestry by swabbing DNA (using a paid service I found online) because I’d like to know about my family origins.
Have you ever had it done before? What was the experience like?
I’d love to hear about your experiences. =]
If you want to learn about the people in your family history, a DNA test should only be used as a supplement. A Mitochondrial test will not give you the names of people in your family tree.
However, if you are doing your family history it can be valuable for you to match yourself with other family trees.
Y DNA goes from father to son only.
In other words if a man has it done it will match his father and his father and his father etc.
Mitochondrial DNA goes from mother to sons and daughters but on the daughters pass it on to their children.
The companies that do the tests will tell you they will help you discover your “deep ancestral roots.” However, it will not be in all of your family lines.
If you are doing family research and you want to match yourself with other family trees, a Mitochondrial test can be helpful if you can match your family with other family trees.
FamilyTreeDNA is the oldest in this type of testing.
Now if you are not interested in doing family research and you just want to get a picture of your regional or ethnic heritage, I have cut and am pasting what I have replied to many others.
There is a type test for regional or ethnicity type testing using Autosomal DNA( Y & Mitochondrial will not give you a complete picture).
This is the company that does that type testing.
http://www.dnatribes.com When you go into their website, you can email them and ask questions.
You have to understand something, there are no pure nationalities or pure races of ethnicitie
Companies that only use Y & Mitochondrial will advertise that they will help you discover “your deep ancestral roots,” but it is only in 2 lines. You are descended from a myriad of family lines.
Y goes from father to son only. Mitochondrial goes from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children.
If you were a male and you could have both, done right off the bat it would leave out your paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather.
The number of people you descend from pyramids as you go back. Y & Mitochondrial will leave out most of them. Those 2 tests are excellent if you are doing family history but not to give you a picture of your ethnic or regional genetic background.
