Ancestry Visa: what are the stipulations regarding duration lapse and study rights?
I am currently working in the U.K. on an Ancestry Visa.
It was issued, 1 year before I arrived in the UK to set up and start working, so that it would be valid for 5 years, until 2012. Therefore, I presume that I would need to apply for a year’s extension to remain here for the full 5 years required to become a permanent resident/citizen. It is my wish to acquire this status. Can someone please confirm that this is correct?
Secondly, I would like to take up part time study at a university in the U.K. I would like to know the restrictions that my visa would place upon my doing so. Is it merely a case of having to pay full international fees?
You are correct. After five years continuously working in the UK (you must be able to show that you have been in employment for the full five years) you can apply for settlement. So you will need to get an extension to make the full five years and then apply for settlement.

You complete a form SET(O).
After a further one full year with ILR you can apply for citizenship.
Your visa should not prevent you from studying part time as long as you are also working. A condition of your visa is “you are able to work and intend to do so in the UK”. So full time study would be in breach of the visa conditions part tinme study whilst working would not be.
