UK Ancestry Visa and bankruptcy?

I am looking to travel to the UK on an ancestry visa. My situation is that I have an absolute mountain of debt here in Australia. Should I declare bankruptcy before I leave or just leave? Will it effect my visa and subsequently will it effect my ability to get citizenship after being over there for 5 years?
Thanks
Re: First reply, If I declare bankruptcy here, but have adequate funds in the bank is that grounds to refuse me the visa? After all, I can’t claim benifets until I am a resident which takes 5 years

The the British embassy in Australia states that you need to met certain requirements two being:

you are able to work and intend to do so in the UK
you can support yourself and any dependants, and live without needing any help from public funds

I think that if you declare yourself bankrupt you won’t be able to support yourself when you land in Britian and as a result you may be denied an visa.

Give the embassy a call if you want.. just a reminder.. have your credit card ready because they charge you $7 for the phone call (they bill you via the credit card).
