Why do so few people know that FOI/open records laws cover birth certificates and other vital records?
Do they not teach civics anymore?
FOI and open records/meetings laws first off are vague in places and only some states have specific guidelines that people can understand. Just went through this in my state which recently updated it’s open meetings laws. I had a city attorney thinking he should actually make the motion for the council to go into executive session. Only board members can make motions. People don’t really read these laws anymore and assume their personal information is protected. LOL, as a journalist, I know how to find out nearly everything about someone – legally. It’s scary.
