Why did the first world war start?
I read like heaps about it. I just can’t understand all the complicated words people put into it, can someone just tell me in normal simple english what happend to create the first world war and what they were actually fighting over? I just can’t understand anything of what people go on about. It’s really stressing me out.

OK, simple it is not, but here goes anyway.
Europe had been forming various alliances with each other for almost forty years prior to 1914 and almost getting into wars with each other over colonial holdings in Africa and Asia. For instance, France and England had almost fought a war in the late 1880′s in Egypt. Germany was also involved in confrontations over territory and resources in colonies. The Boer War in South Africa in the 1890′s had been another confrontation between the British and the Dutch. So, all was not happy in 19th century Europe between the ‘superpowers’ of the day.
The events of 1914 are clear and concise. The assassination of the Archduke and his wife, the demands of the Austrians to search for those responsible for these deaths by looking inside Serbia’s borders and the alliances between the different powers led to the confrontation we call WWI.
Briefly, a simplified outline looks like this:
1 Assassination of the Archduke and his wife Sophie
2 Austria demands to search for persons responsible for the murders inside Serbia’s borders, which are refused.
3 Russia, Serbia’s natural ally (both Slavic and Orthodox), sides against Austria and threatens war if Serbia is violated by Austrian invasion.
4 Austria calls on its ally, the powerful Kaiser and his German army.
5 Russia calls on its ally, the French, after negotiations between the German and Russian leadership, who are first cousins incidentally, break down. The Kaiser and the Tsar can’t come to terms in a series of letters with each other in the summer of 1914. Neither leader thought this matter would lead to war and took the issue less seriously than is thought by some historians, but a series of alliances would entangle them.
6 The Germans massed an army against the greater threat, which is France, on their western borders and eventually would invade through the Low Countries and Belgium.
7 The Belgium invasion violates the Treaty of Ghent (1837), in which Great Britain promised to protect Belgium’s neutrality. The German invasion ended that neutrality and made sure Great Britain would enter the war on the French and Russian side against their cousins in Germany.
8 The Americans claimed the right to trade with either side and the Germans used their new submarines to sink Allied shipping headed to their enemies. The toleration of those sinkings was reached when the Lusitania was sunk and American lives lost in the North Atlantic.
